An affiliate is someone who advertises someone else's products and gets paid a commission. The commission may be based on per lead, per sale, or per click if you have a website.
Per lead means that someone signed up for an offer, but they haven't bought anything yet.
Per sale means that someone bought something. Often with affiliates there are different percentages or fixed amounts for different products.
Per click means that a commission, usually a few pennies, is paid when someone clicks on an ad on a website.
The drawback with affiliate programs is that you don't get paid unless someone buys something, signs up for an offer or clicks on an ad, depending on the type of commission structure of the affiliate agreement. You may not have as much control over what happens with your customer after they go to the affiliate either.
